Renovation of an Automated Crate Storage System
Discover how Alps Group modernized Micarna’s automated crate storage system, enhancing reliability and efficiency while minimizing production impact.

Context
Micarna, a member of the Migros Group, is a key player in meat, poultry, and fish production, operating modern facilities in Courtepin. The storage of clean crates after washing is essential for efficient distribution to production lines. However, the existing system required an upgrade to meet the production’s performance and reliability demands.
Modernization of Automated Crate Storage
Upgrading PLC and HMI systems, optimizing line speed, and reducing downtime while ensuring a fast commissioning process.

Implementation
- Modernization of PLC and HMI: Upgraded SIEMENS PLCs and HMIs with current references
- Software redevelopment: Reprogrammed the system according to a simplified and documented standard in TIA Portal
- User-friendly interfaces: Developed SIEMENS TP1200 HMI interfaces for clear visualization of system status
- Minimized production impact: Commissioning and installation completed over a weekend, with FAT tests performed using SIMIT for full virtual validation
We would like to highlight the seriousness of the project and the excellent collaboration with Alps Group. Despite one of their employees leaving during the project, the overall experience was very positive. Their teams demonstrated professionalism through constant follow-up, promptly addressing any issues. Furthermore, the provider showed extreme flexibility by carrying out numerous tasks over the weekend and making an expert available throughout the production restart.
