The Winning Bet of Deep Learning: Retrofit of a Quality Control Device
Discover how Alps Group refurbished the electrical and automation system and developed a new vision software incorporating Deep Learning
Context
Mimotec SA, a renowned Swiss company specializing in electroforming micro‑precision parts for the watchmaking and industrial sectors, has been operating an automated industrial vision quality control device since 2016 to inspect its production. This machine, commissioned in 2016, was built on an aging computer architecture that now relies on obsolete components and control boards.
Retrofit the control system of the 2‑axis motorized table and provide high‑performance vision software.
Replace the PLC, sensors, and actuators responsible for precisely moving the 2‑axis table and camera. Provide an industrial vision solution incorporating Deep Learning technologies. Improve the user interface. This modernization made it possible to:
- Significantly reduce the time required to program a new inspection recipe
- Resolve hardware obsolescence issues
- Modernize the interface and enhance device usability
Deliverables
Alps Group developed a new PLC program for the motorized elements and created new industrial vision software with a custom graphical user interface. To successfully complete the project, the team performed:
- Electrical redesign and modification of the machine, integrating Beckhoff hardware
- Creation of a new user interface using Wonderware
- Development of new vision software with Deep Learning based on Cognex technology
